Paige Academy, a nonprofit K-8 African American-owned school in Roxbury, was designed by a team of Northeastern University students led by Heather Heimarck. The project involved a collaborative redesign of a community path through the school’s campus, incorporating sustainable features like stormwater mitigation. Key elements include an alphabetical perennial garden created with student involvement and a compost-heated geodesic dome for plant growth. The project engaged students, staff, and the local community in envisioning the improvements, transforming the heavily used pathway into a safer, eco-friendly space that connects to the Orange Line. The design has secured significant grant funding and facilitated Paige Academy’s acquisition of land ownership, ensuring long-term stewardship and educational opportunities.
