About this Project:

The Peace Garden at the Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry (UUUM) opened in 2022 at the historic Meeting House at John Eliot Square in Roxbury. Originally founded as a Puritan church in 1632, the site has a rich history, including the establishment of the Free School of Roxbury (now Roxbury Latin) and Rev. John Eliot’s ministry to Native Americans. Now a community center, the Meeting House hosts UUUM’s social services, including teen programs, a domestic violence shelter, and arts and food support initiatives. Designed by David Jay, the project enhances outdoor spaces, improves accessibility, and creates a welcoming community environment, with ADA-accessible plans approved by the Boston Landmarks Commission and new hardscape and plantings in the Peace Garden.
