Designer Spotlight: An interview with Jiayu Wu

Jiayu, Please tell me a little bit about your background.
I grew up in Shanghai, China, where I earned a Bachelor in Landscape Architecture. I came to Boston in 2022 for my graduate studies at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. I am a dancer and artist, and daughter of a chef!

What drew you to study landscape architecture?
There are mainly two reasons. First, I’ve loved drawing since I was a child. I’m especially interested in color and  texture. I find landscape as a large, living canvas composed of different surfaces, with plants as its strokes. Second, growing up in Shanghai deeply shaped my perspective. It’s a vibrant, dynamic city, modern yet organic, with streets built on former rivers. I’ve always been intrigued by the coexistence of architecture, infrastructure, spontaneous vegetation, and informal public spaces people create with plants and furniture. This dynamic relationship between nature and the built environment inspired me to study landscape, a discipline I found integrates ecology, design, and urban life.

Do you have a design philosophy?

I see landscape as a medium that connects ecology, infrastructure, and daily life. I value local materials and plants and believe landscape design starts with drawing, as a way of seeing, thinking, and testing ideas. To me, good design is sustainable, context-sensitive, and open to possibilities.

Is there an area of landscape design that you’d like to focus on?
I’m especially interested in the intersection of landscape and urban design, particularly public spaces, ecological regeneration, and adaptive infrastructure. I’d like to focus on how localized actions can lead to more sustainable and resilient urban futures.
