Codman Academy Public Charter School is an Expeditionary Learning Mentor School in Dorchester, MA. In partnership with the Codman Square Health Center, since 2001 the school offered high school students in Boston a range of academic experiences and internships in civic and government organizations around the city. The school has recently expanded to serve K-8 students and is completing the renovation of a second building (LEED certified), on Washington Street, across from the Health Center.
The theme of the school is “a walk in the woods” and a careful choice of color and design style offers children an oasis in the busy city.
The outdoor activity area in the rear of the building is approximately 2000 square feet, is nicely fenced, and faces the parking area of newly
built housing. Stairs and a ramp from the school building are in place.
Otherwise, the space is a blank slate. The school’s leadership has contacted COGdesign for help designing a child friendly, engaging space in keeping with the school’s emphasis on nature and creative investigation. COGdesign volunteer designer David McCoy’s design was adopted and hardscape installation began in October, 2015; planting is expected to be completed in spring 2016.
